The Gardens at Cedar Hill project was conceived when Douglass’ mansion was placed on the list of 10 most endangered national parks.  In November 2000, Frederick Douglass Gardens, Inc. (FDGI) was authorized by Congress to create a national memorial and gardens to honor the life and legacy of Frederick Douglass on Interior Department land in the District of Columbia. The contemplative garden was installed at the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site (Douglass Home) in Anacostia, Washington, DC by the Frederick Douglass Gardens, Inc, and is maintained by the National Park Service. It provides lovely embellishment for the grounds and represents a show of support for the preservation of the legacy of a powerful community hero of international acclaim. It creates a place to sit and ponder the past as well as the future.
