New Position at TKF

Congratulations to Christine Tanabe of the TKF Foundation who has been promoted to Director of Communications and Program Development. Christine joined TKF in 2007 in a part time program support capacity. In her new position, Christine will have oversight for all web based communications and new media initiatives. She will also continue to work with TKF partners to develop new programs and opporutnities for enrichment of their spaces that will significantly enhance the physical and programmatic aspects of the gardens, as well as the audiences they impact. Emphasizing ideas and concepts that forge new and creative partnerships between the spaces and other cultural, educational, health and wellness and social benefit organizations, Christine will be helping to bring new capacity and broader communities of users to each space.

TKF Foundation Suspends Grant Program

Like so many throughout the world, TKF is carefully monitoring the depth and breadth of the current economic downturn. This is a challenging time for all of us, and we know that it is particularly challenging for all of those smaller non-profit organizations committed to serving their communities, as well as our fellow funders who partner in the financing of these critical activities.

TKF Foundation has decided to suspend the Open Spaces Sacred Places grant program effective immediately. The final 2010 grant review process will be limited to one prior year deferral applicant and two previously-approved, existing partnerships.

We are very sorry that circumstances do not allow us to continue our support of this grant program.

Donate Garden Books & Camera Equipment for a Good Cause

The Maryland Correctional Institute of Jessup (MCIJ) is in need of our help. They are collecting any gardening/plant/tree books for their library as well as video cameras or still cameras to document their gardening process. The warden at the facility has started a very basic gardening program for interested inmates to compost, grow, and plant garden plots within the prison, but their only resource for information is very limited access to the web. TKF recently awarded MCIJ a 2009 grant to create a meditation garden. On a recent TKF staff visit, the inmates expressed their thirst for knowledge of all things garden related. In addition, a small group of inmates expresed interest in learning camera skills to document this whole process. Any books or cameras/equipment you can donate will help feed the inmates desire to learn, improve their gardening and camera skills, and further their interest what is a totally new experience for most of them. If you can help with books or camera equipment, you can drop them off at our TKF Foundation office located at: 410 Severn Avenue, Suite 216, Annapolis, MD 21403. M-F (9am-5pm).

If you’d like to send the books or camera equipment directly, please mail to:
